What makes Waiheke Island such a popular getaway?

Waiheke is an island paradise with white sandy beaches, boutique wineries, dreamy vineyards and world-class restaurants. It offers everything you could want on a getaway, and it’s only 35 minutes from Auckland’s CBD by Fullers360 ferry.

What are the top five things to do?

A Waiheke Wings tour offers incredible bird’s-eye views over the island’s majestic beaches, vineyards and nearby Rangitoto Island.

Take to the skies for a bird’s-eye view of the island.

Book a wine tour so you can sit back and enjoy the experience without having to worry about driving. You’ll also learn a lot about the history and culture of the island. The 2022 Waiheke Island Wine & Food Festival will be a must-attend event for foodies.

Spend a day exploring the far end of the island. Walk to the historic tunnels at Stony Batter, then enjoy top New Zealand red wines and some of the island’s best food at the local wineries.

Whakenwha national park
Go for a bushwalk in regional park Whakanewha.

Grab your towel, sunscreen and a good book for a day in the sun on one of the many pristine beaches. Onetangi is my favourite.

Explore Waiheke by sea and see hidden coves and amazing houses. By Sea is one of many great charter companies on the island.

How would you describe the island’s restaurant and vineyard scene?

Innovative with a spotlight on fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. Waiheke is a hub of artisans creating quality products.

Casita Miro is a local favourite, specialising in Mediterranean and Spanish food, with an international wine list, including sherries.

What about shopping and art?

Well-known New Zealand artists, carvers, sculptors and potters call Waiheke home, and many galleries, studios and a sculpture park are dotted around the island.

If shopping is your thing, spend an afternoon browsing the boutiques in Oneroa Village or Ostend.

And for nature lovers?

Our swim series, mountain bike events, zipline adventures and walking tours are perfect for adventure lovers. Waiheke is also a wellbeing destination, with yoga, Pilates and guided forest bathing and mindfulness walks.

Where are the top spots to stay?

No matter your budget or taste there’s something to suit everyone. Situated above Oneroa beach, The Boatshed offers chic accommodation, with beautifully appointed guest rooms that look out over the bay.

Any hidden gems?

There’s a great walking track between Little Oneroa beach and Sandy Bay that leads to Diver’s Rock. Head there to watch local kids diving off 10m drops into the rock pools below.
